Synopsis: The immortal Dr Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) holds the key to the Imaginarium, a wonderful place where people can explore the very depths of their imagination. But the Doctor faces a struggle, for he has made a deal with the Devil himself which guarantees the soul of his daughter Valentina (Lily Cole).
Unless Parnassus and Tony, the mysterious amnesiac whom he befriends (portrayed by Heath Ledger plus Jonny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law) can coax a few more souls to lose themselves in the Imaginarium, Valentina will be lost forever.
The Grading
Story: In the introduction to the main film, Terry Gilliam explains that he intended to create a truly original tale. Although this film is unlike many seen in Hollywood, it contains a set structure and a number of story aspects that have been seen before in cinema. C+
Actors: The late, great Heath Ledger may be the lead character of the film but I felt the true star of the picture was Lily Cole who, as an inexperienced actress was able to carry the film’s narrative and bring real life to the character of Valentina, a beautiful but imperfect character. C+
Writer/ Director/ Overall: There are few directors like Terry Gilliam, and the artistic brain of Monty Python has once again shown why his style of filmmaking is one of the most original around.
The Imaginarum of Dr Parnassus is not, as many would think, a 2 hour long tribute to Heath Ledger, but a fantasy tale which beautifully constructs the notion that looks can be deceiving.
Not perfect, but pretty enjoyable. C+
